Stradlopers - Tribute to Elizabeth 'Cookie'

This 2024 mural is a reimagining of the “Strandlopers” first painted in 2016, designed by long-term Dreamcatcher collaborator Bruce Rimell. It pays homage to the Strandloper Khoi and to the nearby ancient fish traps, which are declared a national heritage site.

This mural is also deeply personal to Dreamcatcher. It was painted on the home of Jolene and her family. Jolene is the daughter of Elizabeth (affectionately known as Cookie) — one of the first Dreamcatchers, and a talented singer and guitarist. In the mid-1990s, Elizabeth would light up Melkhoutfontein with her vibrant personality and beautiful songs, entertaining visitors and participating in countless social events. You can even see her featured in the 1998 documentary “A Brave, Brand New World called Social Justice”, which captured our socio-economic development work. In one scene, Elizabeth performs at the Jagersbosch Waenhuis in Stilbaai, surrounded by walls painted by community members as part of an intra-cultural engagement project led by our founder, Anthea. Before Elizabeth passed away, she shared her wish with Jolene for the family home to be painted with a Dreamcatcher mural – and we were delighted to oblige. In the new mural we pay tribute to Elizabeth – can you spot her ?
