The Swift People Remember

Marie and Leonard’s “Homestay with Kamamma“™ is graced by the stunning mural “The Swift People Remember” which was painted in 2024.

Like several of our murals, it pays homage to community ancestry, drawing on ancient rock art that depicts people transforming into swifts (swaweltjies). In ancestral traditions, people would dance and imagine becoming swifts as part of their spirituality and healing. Swifts were revered for their skill in flight, and at the changing of the seasons, ancestors would migrate — from the Klein Karoo to the coast, including the Blombos Cave near Melkhoutfontein. The mural captures this legacy: ancestors turning into swifts and ascending into the stars. It also symbolises a deeper message — a collective hope for transformation and renewal within the community.

In 2025 students from Paul Smith’s College Natural Sciences volunteered with the community to paint up the front wall – as well as worked on repairs to existing murals.
