To coincide with National Heritage Day, last month a ‘Heritage Walkabout’ was held in Melkhoutfontein, educating local youth about the importance of their heritage and environment. The event was a collaboration between Dreamcatcher South Africa NPC, represented by Elmordine, and the Melkhoutfontein WCG eCentre, led by Vilando. Elmordine and Vilando are also both qualified tour guides with Dreamcatcher.
Starting at the central meeting point the participants were introduced to significant landmarks including murals painted through the Dreamcatcher ‘PaintUp with Kamamma’ ™ project which share stories about the community. Throughout the walk, the guides provided insightful explanations, emphasizing the importance of remembering, respecting and celebrating the local and global significance of their heritage.
The participants were also educated on the critical role of protecting the environment for future generations. Discussions focused on how environmental preservation is intertwined with heritage. The youth were excited by the reawakening of their heritage and enthusiastically asked questions and shared their thoughts on what they learned during the walk. The ‘Heritage Walkabout’ fostered a sense of pride and responsibility among the young participants. Equipped with the knowledge to develop and nurture a lasting appreciation for both their culture and the local environment. That’s’ good isn’t it?
We are planning to repeat this local cultural and environmental adventure with more community members soon. Thanks to Elmordine and Vilando for an inspiring walkabout.
