In Melkhoutfontein, they tell stories of heritage, identity, creativity and community pride.

This year marks ten years of Paint Up with Kamamma, a community-led initiative that has transformed homes into a vibrant open-air gallery celebrating local culture, lived experience and Over the past decade, Paint Up with Kamamma has done far more than brighten walls. It has ignited pride, created opportunity and helped reconnect a community with its heritage while transforming the small village of Melkhoutfontein into one of the region’s most distinctive cultural visitor attractions.

More than thirty homes have become canvases of cultural expression. Every mural reflects the people, traditions, history and stories that make Melkhoutfontein unique. Together they have created a colourful open-air gallery that welcomes local and international visitors who leave not only with photographs, but with a deeper understanding of the community and the powerful messages behind the artwork.

At its heart, Paint Up with Kamamma, is about collaboration. Residents, artists, volunteers and visitors have worked side by side, sharing stories, skills and creativity while bringing meaningful designs to life. Every mural reflects a shared process of listening, learning and creating, making each artwork a genuine expression of the community’s identity.

Over time, the murals have become far more than public art. They have created opportunities for cultural exchange, community pride, tourism, skills development and learning, building lasting bridges between local residents and visitors through shared stories, creativity and understanding.

Like communities themselves, the project continues to evolve. Some murals have disappeared as homes changed hands, families moved or properties were extended. Yet the stories endure, with several designs finding new life on new walls. In 2024, the project entered another exciting chapter through mural restoration and the first murals painted in Melkhoutfontein’s new housing area, ensuring that the story continues to grow alongside the community itself.

Today, a dedicated Dreamcatchers team of local women and youth lovingly restore and maintain the murals throughout the village, ensuring that this living gallery continues to flourish. Volunteers and visitors enthusiastically join them, adding their own brushstrokes and becoming part of the continuing story of Paint Up with Kamamma.

Visitors can also explore the murals through guided community WalkAbouts led by accredited Dreamcatchers Tour Guides, discovering not only the artwork but also the rich heritage, traditions and people behind every painting.

More than a public art project, Paint Up with Kamamma reflects Dreamcatchers’ belief that when communities rediscover and celebrate their own heritage, they build not only cultural pride, but stronger social, economic and environmental futures. The paint may brighten the walls, but it is the stories, identity and sense of belonging they bring to life that continue to endure.

As we celebrate ten years of Paint Up with Kamamma,, we invite you to visit, experience the murals for yourself and become part of this living story.

Whether you come as a visitor, volunteer, artist or supporter, there is always room for another brushstroke on this remarkable community canvas.

Come and paint along with us.

The story continues…
