Unique Photo Project Celebrates the People of Melkhoutfontein

Image from the Photobook event

In 2018 and 2019 Hans Mooren, an enthusiastic photo-journalist and Chair of our sister organization, Dreamcatcher Nederlands, visited Melkhoutfontein to launch a photo project with us and the community. Affirming humanity at the heart of the project, and celebrating the people, diversity, and heritage of Melkhoutfontein, Hans took over 200 photos of residents and their homes. The intention was to return in 2020 to exhibit the photos – however this was not possible due to the global Covid pandemic. Excitingly this month we were delighted to welcome back Hans and his wife Coby to Melkhoutfontein. Supporting Dreamcatcher for over 20 years, they are regular visitors staying with the Dreamcatcher Kamammas and call Melkhoutfontein their ‘South African home’.

Hans hosted a community event at Melkhoutfontein Community Hall to celebrate his birthday and the project outcomes. He exhibited the images, strung up as bunting, for all the residents to view. He also provided those community-members photographed with their own copies, and donated books containing all the images to the local library. Han’s work also featured in Suid Kaap Forum.

Thanks to Hans, Coby and all at Dreamcatcher Nederlands for their on-going support.
